HCG Diet Review
Losing weight is hard. Especially when you have lots of information on what to eat and what not. You usually end up having everything that you like and that’s where you go wrong. The several diets available in the market claims to be really effective in losing weight, but when it comes to their safety, most of the diets don’t stand up to the nutritional adequacy and balance principles.
One such diet is an HCG Diet. Have you ever contemplated using the HCG Diet? Well, you need to read on everything about an HCG diet to get your facts straight.
What is An HCG Diet?
If you are new to the weight loss thing and have recently heard of an HCG Diet, you, my friend, are not alone. HCG weight loss is a relatively extreme, yet popular diet that has been a hot topic of discussion for most of the weight loss enthusiasts.
As the name implies, HCG Diet is based on a hormone called HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) that supports pregnancy. This hormone is used as a marker for pregnancy in the home based pregnancy test.
A doctor named Albert Simeons proposed HCG Diet for the first time that proposes the use of:
- An Ultra-low calorie diet consisting of around 500 calories per day.
- Plus the exogenous administration of HCG Hormone
This diet, however, has been suggested as an illegal, fraudulent or dangerous diet according to FDA.
The Role of HCG in Losing Weight
Before we dive deep into the foods to eat and avoid an HCG Diet, it is important for you to understand how HCG helps in weight loss.
According to research been conducting on HCG hormone, this hormone has been suggested to boost metabolism that will help you lose large amounts of stored fats. However, other experiments and studies have suggested that the weight loss goals in the HCG Diet is achieved due to the low-calorie intake alone and it has nothing to do with the HCG hormone.
Another study has revealed that the HCG Hormone injections also cause the loss of muscle mass. That was denied by the proponent of the Diet and has claimed that it only causes the loss of fat, not the muscle loss.
However, it is important to note that there is no scientific evidence or supported studies that support these claims.
The Phases of the HCG Weight loss
As mentioned earlier, the diet is very low fat and very low-caloric diet, thus it is not recommended by us at all.
However, if your doctor recommends this diet, it is generally divided into three phases.
#1, Loading Phase
This initial phase of the diet begins with the HCG injections and plenty of high-fat, high caloric foods. This phase is extended for a maximum of two days and the dieter is then taken to the next phase of the Diet.
#2, Weight Loss Phase
The second phase in the HCG diet is the weight loss phase, where the dieter continues taking HCG injections and eat only 500 calories each day. This phase is continued for 3 to 6 weeks until the dieter reaches his weight loss goals.
#3, Maintenance Phase
The last phase in the diet is its maintenance phase where the follower maintains his lost weight while removing the HCG intake. However, the HCG is gradually stopped and the food intake is gradually increased. But the important thing to note is to avoid the added sugars and starches for three weeks to achieve permanent weight loss goals.
Safety & Side Effects
As mentioned earlier, the HCG weight loss is not all recommended and has been labeled as illegal by the FDA. This is because of the fact that there could be a number of side effects of following this diet, including:
- Low mood
- Blood clots formation
The diet combines the use of HCG hormones and severe calorie restrictions to support weight loss. Therefore, this diet is not all recommended at any cost. People who are looking for dramatic weight loss should consult their dietitians and ask for other reasonable diets that will help them achieve weight loss without causing long-term deficiencies and health conditions.
